Stranger Danger: Finding Security Vulnerabilities Before They Find You!

Open source modules are undoubtedly awesome. However, they also represent an undeniable and massive risk. You’re introducing someone else’s code into your system, often with little or no scrutiny. The wrong package can introduce severe vulnerabilities into your application, exposing your application and your user’s data. This talk will use a sample application, Goof, which uses various vulnerable dependencies, which we will exploit as an attacker would. For each issue, we’ll explain why it happened, show its impact, and – most importantly – see how to avoid or fix it. We’ll live hack exploits like the classic struts vulnerability that recently made it famous, along with Spring Break and several others.

Scaling Your Coding Practices

At Picnic we’ve grown from a handful of engineers to a full-blown engineering organisation with many teams. But, as long as your processes scale accordingly, coding is coding, right? Well, not quite. In this talk we’ll share how our approach to software architecture and corresponding Java development practices changed while scaling teams. Come and learn about the tools and practices that can help you scale!

Samen maken wij Nederland digitaal veilig.

Ethics and AI

Any new advanced technology raises, sooner or later, complex ethical dilemmas. In the case of Artificial Intelligence, these issues can be quite pervasive and complex to tackle, like the cases of digital bias or the lack of transparency in AI algorithms.

What is important is the impact that is already becoming evident in many fields. Discrimination by facial recognition systems, issues with policing & justice systems that show clear biases.

How can we design an ethical and accountable AI?

An award winning platform, he eventually donated it to a university, as Bart found the market dynamics of his company did not allow him to grow it fast enough to truly scale the business.

With his learnings, he joined Marijn Flipse as co-founder, where he was able to pursue the goal of building a highly scalable product-based business in the renewable energy sector. Bart is CEO and product architect at Etergo, deeply involved with strategy and development of new products people can fall in love with.
