Marketplaces are double edge sword. We all know you have to be there in order to reach consumers as they grow faster than the market and depending on the country have a market share of 10 (Netherlands) – 85% (China). However, they are not your friend. If you sell well they copy you, replace you and if not they squeeze you with increasing commissions, advertising fees, and delivery demands. How can you use Marketplaces to expand but still make a living?

Jorij Abraham has been part of the international E-Commerce community since 1997. He has been manager E-commerce at Bijenkorf (an upmarket department store chain), TUI (Europe’s largest travel organization), online publisher at Sanoma Media (the largest media company in the Benelux) and Director of Consulting as Unic (a Europe wide E-commerce strategy & implementation firm). In parallel to these activities, he (fellow) founded two companies, eVentures Europe and vZine.

From 2013 – 2017 he has been Director of Research & Advise at Thuiswinkel.org (the Dutch E-commerce Association) and E-commerce Europe (the European
E-commerce Association with 25.000+ members in 20 countries). He now is Managing Director of the E-commerce Foundation, a research institute offering practical E-commerce research for 50+ E-commerce Associations worldwide. He is also an E-commerce professor at the University of Applied Sciences, TIO.

Jesse Weltevreden is professor Digital Commerce aan de Hogeschool van Amsterdam en research director bij de EcommerceFoundation. Tevens is hij voorzitter van het Retail Innovation Platform, een netwerk van 15 kennisinstellingen in Nederland en België die onderzoek doen naar retail innovatie. Jesse geeft leiding aan een team van onderzoekers en promovendi die onderzoek doen naar e-commerce, retail technology, marketing analytics en de consequenties van online winkelen voor consumentengedrag en winkelgebieden. Hij heeft vele nationale en internationale publicaties op zijn naam staan en is een veelgevraagd spreker op events in binnen- en buitenland.
